Bright blue wings and tail, and a prominent, shaggy crest make this jay easy to identify.
The head and body vary from black to dark brown or dark gray.
Adults have blue vertical “eyebrows” above each eye.
Young birds have a slightly browner head and lack the blue eyebrows of the adult.
Male and female Steller’s Jays look nearly the same.
