The basal leaves are lobed or toothed, forming a rosette above the central taproot.
The leaves grow outward and push down the surrounding vegetation thus killing it by cutting off sunlight.
The name dandelion is derived from the Old French, dent-de-lion, which is literally lion's tooth, referring to the sharply-lobed leaves of the plant.
