Ten-lined June Beetle

The Polyphylla decemlineata is about an inch long and makes a hissing sound, I'm told, when you pick it up.

It's a member of the scarab beetle family: Scarabaeidae.

It ranges from British Columbia down to San Diego and eastward to the Rockies.
