Although aspen grows on many soil types, it is usually found on sandy and gravelly slopes, and is quick to grow on bare soil.
It is the combination of moisture and bare soil which enables aspen seeds to sprout successfully.
It is a very shade intolerant species and requires full sun in order to become established.
