The red fir or "silver tip" Christmas tree grows at elevations between 7000 and 8500 feet.
Four to five hundred years are needed for Red Fir to reach it mature height of 100 to 200 feet with a diameter of 2 to 4 feet.
The thick bark is a dark reddish brown, with rough ridges and deep diagonal furrows. The young trees have gray, smooth bark.
Its the red bark which gives the red fir its name.
