The Red Fir Forest here at Echo Lake Camp is in the old growth stage. There are very few saplings surviving.
A thick layer of litter and competition for moisture prevents saplings from establishing themselves.
Seeds have great difficulty germinating because they need mineral soil and only a third of an inch of litter. We have deeply compacted litter.
