Since the discovery of Lake Tahoe by Fremont on Valentine's Day in 1844 the lake was known by various names.
It was called Mountain Lake, Lake Bonpland, and Lake Bigler.
In 1945, Lake Tahoe was officially named after the Washoe word, da'ow, for lake.
