[ Form Two Loops With Opposite Twists ]

Clove Hitch

We use clove hitches extensively at the City of Berkeley Echo Lake Camp.

Rope fences define pathways through our camp. [ Bring right Loop Over Left Loop ] At each fence post is a clove hitch.

Since the ropes are quite long we need a knot which can be tied without passing the bitter end of a rope through a loop.

The clove hitch fits our need.

We use heavy hemp ropes in camp.

[ Slip Over Post ] These ropes contain fibers which can dig into you bare hands, so its important to wear heavy work gloves for this job.

Begin by forming two loops by twisting in opposite directions as shown in the illustration.

Form a circle to fit over the post by bringing the right loop over the left loop.

Slide the knot over the fence post.

[ Tighten ] Finish by tightening the knot.

These knots have a tendency to sag after they've been out in the weather, so tighten the span as much as you can.

In fact, our veteran ropers often tighten one loop at a time for really taut lines.
